January 27 is Family Literacy Day! On this day every year, people across Canada
spend time reading and learning with their families. And you can join in on
the fun! On January 27th, grab your Mum or Dad, your Sister, your Grandparents
or your pet aardvark and help celebrate this special day.
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Dirt Pie Anyone: Ask members of your family to make a recipe with
you. Have one person read the directions while you measure all the ingredients

- A Poet and you didn't know it: Wearable art is in. Get everyone
in your family to write a line from a story or a poem on your old pear of
jeans.
- Game On: Set up a family game tournament weekend, where everyone
takes a turn selecting one board game that is played as a family. Once all
the games have been played, every persons score from each game is added up.
The person with the highest total score at the end of the tournament wins!
- Once Upon a Time, Pass it On: Build a story with your friends. Write
the first paragraph on a sheet of paper and then pass it on. The person next
in line adds a paragraph, building on your paragraph and passes it on again.
Once the paper is passed through the while line, read it a loud and head the
silly story you build together.
- Travel the World: Well, sort of. Use your library card as your passport.
Check out books on different countries to learn about their history and traditions,
and read as a family.
- Storytelling Pyjama Party: Invite your family members to a pyjama
party in the living room and ask everyone to come with their pjs on, their
sleeping bag in hand, and a bedtime story to share.
- So you want to be an actor?: Practice your theatrical skills by dressing
up as one of your favourite book character and read the book aloud to you
brother, mother or you family dog.
- Be on the "READ ALERT": Shout out words you see on billboards,
candy wrappers or the note you your sister's back
- Author, Author: Create a family joke journal by interviewing your
family members and writing down favourite jokes from you kid brother,father
and great Aunt Edna.
- Know it all: Look up the meaning of funny words like "onomatopoeia"
and "Chinook" and test your parents' word power!
